Batteries & Electronics
NEVER place batteries or electronics in your curbside recycling bin or at any of the 24/7 Residential Drop-off Recycling locations!
Electronics recycling has a significant environmental impact by reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Here's how:
1. Prevents Toxic Pollution
Electronic devices contain hazardous substances like lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants. When e-waste is improperly disposed of or incinerated, these toxins can leach into soil and water or be released into the air, harming ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
2. Reduces E-Waste in Landfills
E-waste is one of the fastest-growing types of waste. Between 50 and 60 million tons of e-waste are produced yearly, and less than 20% is recycled correctly. Recycling helps divert tons of electronics from landfills each year, thereby minimizing the strain on landfill space and reducing the risk of landfill fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
3. Conserves Natural Resources
Electronics contain valuable materials like gold, silver, copper, aluminum, and rare earth metals. Mining these materials is energy-intensive and environmentally destructive. Recycling allows for the recovery and reuse of these resources, reducing the need for further mining and protecting ecosystems.
4. Lowers Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Manufacturing new electronics from raw materials requires more energy than using recycled materials. Recycling electronics reduces the demand for energy-intensive production processes, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions that contribute to climate change.
